Q: This was first introduced in the 1880’s as a deterrent and distraction from hedonistic and sinful activity. What was it?
A: The roller coaster. It was built in Coney Island by LaMarcus Thompson.
In the 1880s, a businessman named LaMarcus Thompson, was so disgusted with the sinful behavior of his fellow humans (sex, drinking etc), that he marched on down to Coney Island, where all this was going down, and invented the first roller coaster. His thinking was he’d give all the sinful people down there another kind of thrill, ideally keeping them away from drinking and sex.
