Jonathan a giant 500-pound tortoise is now the all-time verified record holder of the world’s oldest tortoise. Tu’i Malila, once a titleholder, died in Tonga in 1965 at 189-years-old. Only one other tortoise was thought to be older. Adwaita, who died in 2006 in India, was believed to have been an amazing 255-years-old at the time of his death…the Aldabra giant tortoise Johnathon is now 189 years old, going strong and doing extremely well. He lives at the Plantation House on Saint Helena. He’s blind from cataracts, has lost his sense of smell, and so cannot detect food but is getting lots of help with a new diet intended to keep him healthy and extend his life. The most recent photo of Jonathon was taken in April 2021. Due to his old age, Jonathan spends his days doing almost everything with his mate, including eating, sleeping, and mating. How many 189 year-olds can claim that?….. Ed
