The pandemic hasn’t been a picnic for anyone, but for Queenston’s Abbie Gowans, picnics were the answer. When her co-op placement was cancelled last summer, the arts and business student with University of Waterloo did some brainstorming. What kind of new experience could she offer with the world turned upside down? Her dad showed her an article on a gourmet picnic service in Vancouver called Picnix, in which everything needed for an old-fashioned outdoor meal was delivered to people in parks.
With all of the cuisine and parks in Niagara, she knew the idea could fly. The Vancouver owner agreed and allowed Gowans to use the company to start up a Niagara version, Niagara-on-the-Lake being the specific location. Using locally sourced products from the area, Picnix Niagara will prepare a five-course meal for two, delivered in a unique wooden portable wagon that unfolds into a tabletop. It comes with lemonade and water, cutlery, linens, plates and waterproof blankets and pillows, additional platters if needed. For now, the service delivers to Simcoe Park in Niagara-on-the-Lake, across from Prince of Wales Hotel. The basic package is $125 and deliveries to the park are made at noon or 6 p.m., seven days a week.
