Many cat owners will have noticed your felines tendency to favour the cardboard packaging their new toys arrive in, as opposed to the toys themselves. Cardboard boxes are a particular hit and the phrase ‘If it fits, I sits‘ can be applied to almost any type of cardboard box. Small, tall, flat and hardly enough space at all boxes will all be used by your kitty. So why do they love cardboard boxes so much?
Consider the nature of cats. Cautions and somewhat suspicious with a curiosity that is difficult to suppress. The first reaction of nearly all cats to a new situation is to withdraw and hide. Hiding is a strategy of the species to cope with changes and stress. Boxes provide the ideal hiding place within their already enclosed environments. Cardboard as a material itself is thought to reduce stress for cats in not only providing a hiding place but also through its smell and texture. Cats love to scratch and chew it almost as much as they like to sleep in it or on it because it’s like a security blanket and it’s also warm. If you give your cat a choice between a plastic box and a cardboard container, cardboard will win…..Ed
