The Easy-Bake Oven is a working toy oven that Kenner of Cincinnati, Ohio, introduced in 1963. After Kenner closed down Hasbro continued to manufacture the oven. The original toy used a pair of ordinary incandescent light bulbs as a heat source; current versions use a true heating element. In the 60’s you could purchase a 119-piece Junior Chef Food Mix set for just $8.99. Kenner sold 500,000 Easy-Bake Ovens in the first year of production. By 1997, more than 16 million Easy-Bake Ovens (in 11 models) had been sold. The oven comes with packets of cake mix and small round pans. Additional mixes can be purchased separately. After water is added to the mix in the pan, it is pushed into the oven through a slot. After cooking, the cake is pushed out through a slot in the other end. Easy bake ovens were originally marketed to young girls but as of 2012 Hasbro markets the toys for both girls and boys. The Easy bake has gone through many designs and costs on average $60 Canadian.
National Easy-Bake Oven Day is observed on November 4, that’s today, it’s the day in which the toy oven was originally released in 1963 and changed popular culture 58 years ago…Ed
