Is there anything better than fresh Ontario peaches in the summer? From eating peaches from a roadside fruit stand, or enjoying the pies, jams and baked goods from your local bakery, peach season draws crowds from all over! You’ll find all sorts of farm stands where you can buy fresh peaches including your local supermarket. There are a number of places in Niagara that you can pick your very own peaches straight from the orchard! Niagara’s unique climate due to its boundary between the escarpment and Lake Ontario makes for prime fruit growing conditions. As one of Ontario’s largest fruit-growing regions, Niagara produces over 90% of the tender fruit in the province with an astonishing 1.5 million fruit trees! Peaches are ready now through to early September. There’s an astounding 15 different varieties of peaches in the region – all delicious! Some of the most common varieties include Garnet Beauty, Fantasia, Harrow Beauty, and Red Havens.
Once you’ve picked them, avoid leaving them in plastic bags or in the sun. If you want to slow the ripening process, store them in the fridge for up to five days if you aren’t freezing them or canning them right away. Many will ripen on your kitchen counter top in a matter of days…Have you eaten any Ontario peaches yet?…..Ed
