It’s been 30 years since Canada got to bring the Stanley Cup home. Though the teams currently in the playoffs for the Great White North have droughts that are much longer, but NO Canadian team has won in since 92-93. The study by the Angus Reid Institute, found 64% of Canadian hockey fans say they are going to cheer for which ever of the 3 Canadian teams advance to try and break that curse. Only 9% say they will only cheer for their own team.
Now, it’s not quite universal, fans of the Flames aren’t likely to back the Oilers, and Canadiens fans are less likely to cheer for the Leafs, but overall most Canadian fans just want a Canadian team to hoist the cup again.
Attention paid to the NHL remains stable in Canada, as 36 per cent say they follow the league closely. That said, this proportion has dipped from 41 per cent in 2014 and 43 per cent in 2018.
