Q: The number of Canadian families doing this increased rapidly during the pandemic. 70% of those who did this, continue to do it. What is it?
A: Homeschooling.
What seems undeniable is the endurance of homeschooling among those previously uninvolved, after the public schools reopened. In the seven provinces for which we have real numbers, almost three-quarters (71 percent) of new homeschooling parents continued on, after the schools reopened. Some may have lingering Covid anxieties. Still, one major motive for homeschooling has been “dissatisfaction with the public school culture” or the “progressive ideology” in the public schools. So the 49 percent increase in homeschooling numbers, from pre- to post-Covid, may largely represent parents who have newly discovered that they have a practical and enjoyable alternative.
