The Poppy As A Remembrance Symbol Turns 100

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the poppy being used as a symbol of the horrible costs and sacrifices of war.

Frenchwoman Anna Guerin is credited with first proposing the poppy, inspired by Canadian John McCrae’s First World War poem “In Flanders Fields.”

The Great War Veterans’ Association of Canada officially adopted the symbol in 1921.

The Royal Canadian Legion is selling commemorative pins online that replicate the original 1921 lapel pin.
