As an example, police have issued a warning about an alleged home repair scam believed to be operating in the area of Oakville, Milton and Burlington. Individuals claiming to be contractors attended two homes in Burlington where they convinced the elderly residents to let them do repair work. Then requested a large cash deposit. The residents handed this money over. The repair work started, however then stopped, then the home owner was asked for more money for supplies to complete the project. Police said once the final cash payment was received, the contractors disappeared; the victims reportedly lost $5,000 each. The suspects are described as two men with Irish or possibly Scottish accents…. contact the Halton Police Regional Fraud Unit at 905-465-8741, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or haltoncrimestoppers.ca….Ed
