Conservative MP for Brant Larry Brock is stepping down. He announced last night on social media that he will return to his former position with the Brantford Crown Attorney's Office. This will trigger a by-election.
The City of Brantford and the County of Brant have officially paused plans for a major municipal boundary adjustment involving the Brantford Airport. Officials say the upcoming municipal election cycle leaves insufficient time to finalize the details. As a result, the public meetings have also been canceled. Mayors from both municipalities say the work completed so far will serve as a foundation for future talks.
Statistics Canada is set to release its latest Labour Force Survey for July this morning. A Reuters poll of economists predicts Canada added 15,000 jobs last month, and the unemployment rate is expected to remain at 6.5 percent.
A police cruiser became an unlikely home for a mother cat and her six newborn kittens in North Bay. Officers and local animal welfare groups safely rescued the family after finding them inside a vehicle component beneath the cruiser. They were taken to the OSPCA and are in good health. Officials say they'll be available for adoption in the coming months.
In the CFL, the Argonauts beat Calgary 33–30. The Tiger-Cats are in B.C. tomorrow at 7.
In the WNBA, Toronto lost to Portland 97–83.
The Blue Jays lost 3–2 in 11 innings to Chicago in a makeup game. They begin a weekend road series in Philadelphia tonight at 6:40.
At the National Bank Open, another Canadian is out of the women's doubles tournament. Ottawa's Gabriela Dabrowski and her Russian partner were eliminated. Leylah Fernandez teamed up with her sister Bianca but also lost their doubles match. In women's singles, Fernandez will face reigning French Open champion Mirra Andreeva.
