Q: A psychological study found that those of us who do this regularly either alone or with others say it improves their mental health and well being. What is it?
A: Watch game shows. Playing along gives them a sense of engagement and interaction.
The Journal of Psychological Rehabilitation and Mental Health conducted a study on the correlation between game shows and mental health. The study found peoples’ mental health increased when watching game shows. This is due to their interactive nature, allowing the mind to be engaged in something other than what may be deterring their positivity, therefore establishing a more positive space. Game shows saw a surge in popularity during the pandemic, possibly for the positivity that they bring.
Despite these positive correlations between mental health and game shows, some respondents say they do not go out of their way to watch them. “Game shows were something I used to watch when I had to watch live TV. Now we live in an age where we can choose what television to watch at all times,” a respondent noted.
Still, if watching game shows brings you joy and keeps you busy at on a regular schedule then that is a mental health boost you should allow yourself to have.
