The day Oshawa auto workers have dreaded for months has arrived, as GM Canada will cut a shift at the city's plant, costing over 1,000 workers their jobs. Up to 1,200 workers are expected to complete their final shift tomorrow as the company scales back its Canadian operations. Jeff Gray, Unifor Local 222 president, said they did everything they could in making arguments to General Motors. GM is cutting the plant's midnight shift, which is one of three shifts. High seniority members will be bumped to the shifts, lower seniority members across all three shifts will lose their jobs. Plans to put a 10-story, 90-unit apartment building on a busy section of West Street received a hard no from Branford City Council Tuesday. Counselors voted unanimously to reject the zoning bylaw amendment that would allow the proposal by the Handley Group Incorporated to move forward on a property at 342 and 346 West Street. The property is in an intensification corridor, which allows for higher density housing like apartment buildings. The developer's proposal was recommended for approval by the city's planning staff. Counselors at a recent planning committee objected to the plan saying it was too much density on too small of a property. Before it's NHL last night, Islanders beat the Rangers 5-2. It was the jackets over the Flyers 5-3, Ottawa 5, Colorado 2. Busy schedule tonight in the NHL with 15 games on tap. Maple Leafs start a six-game road trip in Seattle.
